Providing Information for Research: Federal Research Institute Libraries in NigeriaDepartment of Library Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria The main function of special libraries in research organizations is to provide the necessary information for research. A study was undertaken in 1983 to determine the extent and range of resources available to libraries of the Nigerian Federal Government research institutes in the field of the applied sciences. The results show that these libraries do not have sufficient resources to enable them to function effectively, since their buildings, collections and staffing levels are all inadequate. Suggestions are made for improving the standards of service offered to researchers.
